JDPSO leads Active Shooter Course for School Board
In an effort to prepare educators for a potential active shooter threat, deputies with the Sheriff's Office hosted a "RUN HIDE FIGHT" training course. The course was led by Commanders Douglas Britnell and Bill Kettler. Together, they discussed the increasing incidents of active shooter in the United States, as well as what steps teachers can take to protect students from harm. They answered questions and addressed concerns shared by attendants. |

The Sheriff's Office participated in the Elton Community Health Fair, providing information, school supplies and services to citizens.
Former Chief Deputy Passes Away
JDPSO bids a sad farewell to former Chief Deputy Larry Dupuis, who passed away during the summer of this year, after a battle with a lengthy illness. The former Chief Deputy served under the Ricky Edwards Administration for 20 years beginning in 1992. Prior to joining JDPSO Dupuis worked for Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office (APSO) where he began as a patrol deputy and eventually worked his way up to Sgt. During his time at APSO, he also managed an agriculture career as a farmer.

Local business pays tribute to former Chief Deputy
Former Chief Deputy Dupuis had lunch at the Jennings Sonic every day with his best friend, and former JDPSO Mechanic Michael Mouton. The duo was well known at the Drive-In and had become more than just customers to the staff, but friends. Employees blocked off and erected a memorial sign in the drive through stall where the long-time friends had lunch every day. The loss of Dupuis was felt throughout the city Jennings, as well as the whole parish. |
JDPSO Hosts Annual COA Fall Fest Gumbo
|
GUMBO The Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office (JDPSO) hosts the Annual Council On Aging (COA) Fall Fest Gumbo event. Senior citizens from all over the parish gathered at the Welsh Community Center to enjoy a home cooked chicken and sausage gumbo with rice, potato salad and dessert. The meal is provided by Sheriff Ivy Woods and served by local high school students. Members of JDPSO helped area nursing home staff members to get bussed in seniors settled in the building despite the rainy weather that day. |
While waiting for the meal to be served, guests enjoyed refreshments in a festive fall atmosphere as door prizes were announced and distributed.
Sheriff Ivy Woods and Reverend Jude Fernando lead the opening prayer before the meal. Afterwards, Rev. Jude blessed the meal, as well as all the young volunteers who dedicated their time and efforts to ensuring the parish seniors had an enjoyable event.

Deputies Participates in National Night Out Event
|
For the sixth year in a row, the Lake Arthur Police Department hostd the Annual National Night Out. National Night Out began in 1984 in an effort to build a strong relationship with the local first responders and members of the community. It began simply with neighbors turning on their porch lights and sitting in front of their homes. The first National Night Out involved 2.5 million residents across 400 communities in 23 states. Deputies with JDSO participated in the annual community event along with several other local agencies, including the LAPD, the Lake Arthur Fire Department, Jeff Davis Fire District 4, Louisiana State Police Troop D, Acadian Ambulance, AirMed, MedExpress and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries. Deputies handed out coloring and activity books, colors, pencils and stickers. Participants also toured the mobile command unit and participated in exercises while using alcohol and drug simulation goggles. These goggles are used by the agencies D.A.R.E. deputies to demonstrate how the use of drugs and alcohol can affect the user's vision, depth perception and motor skills. |

JDPSO Holds K-9 Demonstration
Detective Barry Miller and his K-9 Rocky held a bite demonstration for spectators. He discussed and educated them on the purpose and method of using canines in law enforcement.

Civil Commander Retires after 4 Decades of Service After thirty-one and a half years with the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office, Civil Commander Susette Mouton has left the building. True to her commitment, Commander Mouton worked to ensure that her successors were fully informed of their duties until the last minutes of her employment. It's worth mentioning that it took two people to replace her. Her long and honored career with the Sheriff's Office followed eleven years with the City of Jennings. There, as a junior in high school, Susette worked as a clerk with the Jennings Police Department for a year through the school work program. By her senior year in the program, she'd moved on as a clerk in Jennings City Court where she remained employed for another 9 years as a clerk full-time after her high school graduation. |
When Sheriff Ricky Edwards was elected in 1992, he hired Susette to work in the agency finance division. She continued working in finance for four years before she was promoted to Chief Civil Deputy where she remained when Sheriff Ivy Wood was elected in 2012 and until her retirement.
With a total of over forty-one years of public service, Susette is a wealth of experience and knowledge. Always ready to take on any challenge, she's dealt with a plethora of issues at every stage of her career. She was always the first to offer a calm voice of reason during conflicts and a helping hand during the struggles of those around her.

Although retired, Susette said she has lots of plans in the near future. After sleeping in for a few days, she already has another project lined up to pursue.
Her presence in these halls will be greatly missed, and our offices won't be the same without her.
Good luck with all your future plans, Susette. With joyful tears and goodbyes, we at the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office wish you a very happy and blessed retirement. You've earned it!

Mobile Command Unit on Standby During Christmas Shopping Season
The JDPSO Mobile Command Unit was stationed outside of the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Jennings to provide on site security during the busy holiday shopping season. The Mobile Command Unit provides a centralized location for deputies to convene, as well as a nearby source of assistance for citizens to reach out to in the event of an emergency. |

Deputies Participate in LSP Shop with a Cop Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Office Deputies Brant Duplechain and Trey Herndon participated in the Louisiana State Police Troop D Annual Shop with a Cop Program. The program was founded by LSP Trooper Scott O'Connell in conjunction with a local benefactor and assisted by area law enforcement agencies. Following Trooper O'Connell's passing in 2018, the program has continued in his honor. Participating agencies include LSP Troop D, JDPSO, Welsh Police Dept. (WPD), Elton Police Dept. (EPD), Fenton Police Dept. (FPD) and Iowa Police Dept. (IPD). |
