Deputy Involved Shooting 1-10-25 *THIS IS AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION
On January 10, 2025, at approximately 7:37 p.m., Patrol Sergeant Josh Clement, with the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Office, was patrolling the area of Hwy 99, South of Hwy 102 near Welsh. Sgt. Clement was traveling southbound and observed an unknown male who was walking northbound on Hwy 99. Due to the cold weather and lack of light on the highway, Sgt. Clement turned around to assist the individual.
Sgt. Clement contacted the individual and during the process a physical altercation took place that caused Sgt. Clement to discharge his weapon. The individual was ultimately taken into custody by additional deputies, who arrived on scene, without further incident.
Deputies were able to identify the suspect as Mark Buller of Iowa, LA. It was discovered Buller had an active warrant through Jefferson Davis Sheriff's Office for failure to register as a sex offender and simple burglary.
Both Sgt. Clement and Buller were transported to local hospitals and were treated for their injuries then later released.
Sheriff Kyle Miers requested assistance from the Louisiana State Police who arrived on scene to complete their investigation of the weapon discharge while JDPSO continued the investigation on Mark Buller.
Buller was arrested and booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Correctional Center by JDPSO and charged with:
Attempted 1st degree murder
Attempted disarming of a police officer
Disarming a police officer
Aggravated 2nd degree battery
Resisting a police officer with force or violence
Attempted theft of motor vehicle
He is being held with no bond.
Sheriff Miers wants to take this time to thank all the agencies that assisted with the situation: Fenton PD who arrived on scene; Welsh PD who arrived on scene and transported Sgt. Clement to a local hospital; Louisiana State Police, for their assistance with the investigation; Jennings PD for offering assistance with patrolling the parish while JDPSO handles the situation; Lake Charles PD and Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office assisted with blocking traffic for the transportation of Sgt. Clement to the hospital. Sheriff Miers wants to thank all agencies who called for support, and asks that everyone continue to pray for all deputies and dispatchers who were involved in this situation.
