D.A.R.E.

D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, CA and has been so successful that it is now being utilized in over 75 percent of the school districts in the United States and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is an effort between specially trained law enforcement officers, schools, teachers, parents, and the community to educate children about the real dangers of drugs and alcohol.

There are 12 science-based lessons that the D.A.R.E. officers cover with each of their groups. Some of the lesson topics are: Decision-Making Skills, Understanding Risks, Understanding Of How Substances Affect The Brain And Body, Communication Skills, Refusal Skills, How To Pick Friends, and Cool Things To Do Without Using Drugs. Along with these lessons which the students enjoy, they also each write an essay and complete their D.A.R.E. Planner before being able to graduate.

The Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office has two D.A.R.E. officers, Deputy Mika Miguez and Deputy Gale Richard, who travel to schools within the parish to speak with students throughout the school year. Both of these Deputies were required to take an 80-hour course in order to be certified through D.A.R.E before teaching any D.A.R.E. curriculum; both Deputies are also Louisiana P.O.S.T. certified. Both of these Deputies are available to speak to any civic group or class on many different subjects upon request. You may contact Deputy Gale Richard at (337)-821-2106 if you have any questions or wish to have a deputy speak at your meeting or group event.

D.A.R.E. 2013 graduation was held on May 8th at Jennings Elementary School with kids from schools all over the parish. Several awards and certificates were given out. Here are a few pictures from the event:
