The Jefferson Davis Sheriff's Office has two K-9 deputies that help in the fight against illegal drugs. All Deputies and canines have gone through extensive training and are certified in all aspects of their duties. Both of our K-9 Deputies have multi-purpose dogs which are able to track subjects who have fled a scene, help locate people that are lost, and search out and find illegal narcotics.
The dogs have been trained to indicate the presence of drugs, regardless of the quantity. Upon location of the odor of a controlled substance, the dog will alert to the smell by sitting at the source of the odor. This response may also indicate that the item(s) in question have been recently contaminated with, or associated with, the odor of one or more controlled substances. Both the dog and the handler undergo maintenance-training regularly in order to be familiar with new substances and to keep their senses sharp.
The Sheriff's Department uses the K-9 Unit in everyday duties on patrol, and can be called upon to assist any other division at the Sheriff's Department or other agencies requesting assistance within the parish.
