JDSO holds 2019 Spring D.A.R.E. Graduations

The Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) recently held the 2019 spring session D.A.R.E. graduations for the sixth grade students of Lake Arthur Elementary School (LAES) and Jennings Elementary School (JES) and the fifth grade students of Bethel Christian School (BCS) and Hathaway Elementary School (HES).

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is an international substance abuse prevention program designed to deter the use of controlled drugs, gang membership and activity and violent behavior. D.A.R.E. is a police officer led series of classroom lessons, providing young people the opportunity to see officers in a helping role, rather than just an enforcement role. It also humanizes police, allowing young people to relate to officers as people, while also opening lines of communication between law enforcement and youth.

The 10-week, interactive in-school curriculum, “Keepin’ it Real,” also teaches students how to develop basic skills needed to make safe and responsible life choices, being healthy, resisting negative peer pressure, staying bully free and avoiding violence.

LAES D.A.R.E. Graduation

The LAES D.A.R.E. Graduation ceremony was held on Monday, May 6, and began with the D.A.R.E. song as students entered the school auditorium. Mistress and Master of Ceremony Addison Abshire and Andrew Linscombe led the event, followed by the prayer delivered by Carson Myers and Isabella Chapman. The Pledge of Allegiance was delivered by Delanie Ardoin and Rowan Trahan, while Mallory Lyon followed along as the Sign Language Interpreter.

Lake Arthur High School (LAHS) students Alexis Broussard, Kedrick Gabriel, Allison Guillory, Braden Hebert, Taylor Hibbitts and Christian Trahan were recognized as the LAES Role Models.

Ava Hall delivered the D.A.R.E. Mission and Waylon Dugas delivered the D.A.R.E. Vision. The History of D.A.R.E. was presented by Mckenzie Simon, Gavin Viator, Mathias Jones and Gabby Sellers.

JDSO Deputy Gale Richard, with assistance from sixth grade teachers Rhonda Campbell, Penny Leger and Lindsey Sittig, presented the D.A.R.E. graduation certificates. Richard then announced Andrew Linscombe, Mallory Lyon, Layla Gauthier, Gavin Viator, Keelie Arceneaux, Aaliyah Theriot, Gabby Sellers and Kaylor Schexnider as the classroom essay winners, with Addison Abshire as the overall school essay winner.

BCS D.A.R.E. Graduation

The BCS D.A.R.E. Graduation ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 7, and began with the D.A.R.E. song, as fifth students entered the Bethel Christian Church sanctuary. An introduction was then delivered by Mistress and Master of Ceremony Zyla Comer and Gavin Bouley, who led the event. The Pledge of Allegiance, delivered by Rachael Bergeaux and Hudson Dupuis, was followed by the presentation of the Christian Flag, presented by Autumn Litteral and Julianna Flores, the presentation of the Bible Flag by Ethan Mouhot and Chloe McKelroy and then the prayer delivered by Layne Hicks.

Jennings High School (JHS) students Kent Brown, Gabrielle Daigle, Brock Duhon and Madisyn Ward were recognized as the BCS Role Models, before Kali Patterson delivered the D.A.R.E. Mission, and Khadence Hill delivered the D.A.R.E. Vision. The History of D.A.R.E. was presented by David Pentecost, Zechariah Reed, Reagan Cormier and Sagan Griffith.

JDSO Deputy Mika Miguez, then announced the classroom essay winners as Layne Hicks, Zechariah Reed and Gavin Bouley, with Zyla Comer as the overall school winner.

JES D.A.R.E. Graduation

The JES D.A.R.E. Graduation ceremony was held on Wednesday, May 8. After students filled the school auditorium, the ceremony began with an introduction by Mistress and Master of Ceremony Caroline Cormier and Jacque Person, who led the event. The Pledge of Allegiance was then delivered by Jayce Legros and Corbin Webre, followed by the prayer delivered by Brooklyn Doucet.

JES Role Models were recognized as Jennings High School (JHS) students Madeline Futch, Morgan Leblanc, Keelan McZeal, Spencer Stelly, Caroline Vanhook and Trey Williams. Braionie Mouton then delivered the D.A.R.E. Mission, and Joshua Capdeville delivered the D.A.R.E. Vision. The History of D.A.R.E. was presented by Julia Green, Amariah Edwards, Jamell Davis and Elijah Guidry.

HES D.A.R.E. Graduation

The HES D.A.R.E. Graduation was held on Thursday, May 9, and led by Mistress and Master of Ceremony Mylie Heinen and Braedon Trahan. The opening prayer was delivered by Zoey Young and Judah Belt, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, delivered by Caiden Pitre and Gabrielle Henry.

The D.A.R.E. Mission was then delivered by Payton Crochet, followed by the D.A.R.E. Vision, delivered by Keely Francis. The History of D.A.R.E. was delivered by Riley LeJeune, Channing Gary, Averi Thibodeaux and Davin Seilhan.

Hathaway High School (HHS) students Ian Andrepont, Lindsay Clement, Kade Fontenot, Skylar Henry and Lauryn Simmons were recognized as HES Role Models.

Following the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office 2019 Spring D.A.R.E. graduations for LAES, BCS, JES and HES, Sheriff Ivy Woods (center) and D.A.R.E. Officers Gale Richard (second from left) and Mika Miguez (second from right) took the 2019 spring D.A.R.E. role models for an honorary luncheon to Mr. Gatti’s restaurant in Jennings.

The role models who attended the luncheon were (pictured here, in no particular order) LAHS student Braden Hebert; BCS students Kent Brown, Gabrielle Daigle, Brock Duhon and Madisyn Ward and JHS students Madeline Futch, Keelan McZeal, Spencer Stelly and Trey Williams. Not pictured, but also present were HHS students Ian Andrepont, Lindsey Clement, Kade Fontenot, Skyler Henry and Lauryn Simmons.
